Metal catalysts

Metal substrate.
Specialist recycling.

Metal catalytic converters use a thin metallic foil substrate coated with an active layer containing precious metals. Their processing requires a different technological approach.

Construction

A different substrate requires a different processing method.

A metal catalytic converter consists of a metal casing and a substrate made from thin, specially shaped metallic foil. The substrate surface is coated with a layer containing precious metals responsible for catalytic reactions.

Unlike brittle ceramic monolith, a metallic substrate cannot be prepared for recovery in the same way. The process requires specialist equipment, high-powered machinery and experience in material preparation.

Why it matters

Metal and ceramic catalytic converters differ in more than just construction.

The difference in construction affects material preparation, analysis and the subsequent precious-metal recovery process.

01

Metal foil

The substrate consists of thin metal layers with a large surface area rather than a ceramic block.

02

Active layer

The substrate surface has a coating containing platinum, palladium and rhodium, among other metals.

03

Specialist processing

Separating and preparing the metallic substrate requires different equipment from ceramic grinding.

04

Individual valuation

Value depends on the material type, metal content, condition and current market conditions.

01Identification02Preparation03Analysis04Valuation
From catalytic converter to valuation

We identify the material first and then determine its value.

For metal catalytic converters, correct identification of the construction and substrate type is particularly important. The material is then prepared for further analysis and recovery.

Valuation takes into account precious-metal content, current quotations and exchange rates. For larger batches, cooperation terms are agreed individually.

Material value

Pt, Pd and Rh remain key to valuation.

The use of a metallic substrate alone does not determine the price. What matters most is the actual precious-metal content and quantity of material.

Pt

Platinum

One of the principal platinum-group metals used in catalytic systems.

Pd

Palladium

Its content can significantly affect the value of a particular catalyst type.

Rh

Rhodium

A metal used in catalytic coatings whose market quotation is one of the valuation factors.
